Titles and Other Concerns

Okay, I’ve already written 3000+ words this morning, but none of them go to my book. This is the sticky, tricky bit of writing as a job. There was cover copy to discuss for the third Vespertine book, so several versions of that, 800 words later (600 deleted,) cover copy.

But that brought up a question about the title. You’ll note that I just called it the third Vespertine book. That’s because after examining the way the original title looked in text, in the established typeface for the series, as a domain name, and how it sounded spoken aloud… we may change it.

Another thousand words in back and forth e-mails trying to figure something out, all very productive words. But nothing that adds to the book that I have on deadline.

Then I stopped to write a guest blog, because The Springsweet is coming out in April, and it’s time to gear up for promoting that. That was another 500 words or so– useful! But not for the book.

And now I’m going to donate a couple hundred words to this here blogpost; I have already sent off 300 words to my best friend regarding the interior of Christina Aguilera’s house, and now I need to get back to work.

(But this is why I say that writer’s block isn’t actually writer’s block. We write all kinds of words throughout the day and rarely get stuck. If you’re stuck on your book, you may be procrastinating, you may not have figured something out yet, or you may have made a mistake and written yourself into a corner.

Words? They don’t get blocked. Creativity, though? That so does.)
