A few years back I was working as a nurse on a medical unit. The unit consisted of one long hall with a nurses’ station in the center. I had the patients on one end of the hall and another nurse, Lydia, took care of the patients on the other.

One evening Lydia and I sat side by side at the desk at the nurses’ station, working on the computer. From the corner of my eye I could see a man walking toward the desk from Lydia’s end of the hall. He was tall, wearing a brown suit and a light-colored hat. He stopped in front of Lydia and said nothing, simply waited. I figured he wanted to ask her something about the patient he was visiting.

Lydia ignored him and continued tapping away at the computer. How rude! I thought. Obviously the man didn’t want to talk to ME. So I looked up from my own work to ask him what he needed–

–and no one was there.

Creeped out, I stood up and looked up and down the hall. It was totally empty.

I turned to Lydia and demanded, “Did you see that man?”

Lydia glanced up at last. “What man?”

“I swear there was a man standing in front of you just now.”

Lydia shrugged. “I didn’t see anyone.”

“I must be hallucinating.”

“Guess so.”

An hour later Lydia received a phone call: her brother died unexpectedly one hour before.

Yes, he had a brown suit and always wore a hat.
